Project Background
Since 2020, BAO has been a trusted supplier of conveyor belts to several of China Baowu’s flagship integrated steel mills in Eastern China. These facilities handle enormous volumes of iron ore, coal, coke, and fluxes across complex networks of overland, inclined, and indoor conveyors that form the backbone of the raw material supply chain.
Client Challenges
The raw material handling teams at Baowu’s mills dealt with some of the toughest conveyor conditions in the industry:
Extreme Throughput and Impact
Belts routinely carried loads of 8,000–10,000 tons per hour, with large ore lumps dropping from considerable heights at transfer points.
Mixed Temperature Exposure
While most routes handled ambient materials, certain sections near sinter plants or hot metal transfer saw occasional elevated temperatures and thermal radiation.
Abrasive and Corrosive Wear
Fine iron ore dust combined with moisture and minor chemical residues aggressively attacked cover rubber, leading to premature thinning and carcass exposure.
Zero-Tolerance for Delays
Any stoppage in the main ore or coal feed lines risked disrupting blast furnace operations, with cascading financial implications measured in millions per day.
BAO's Tailored Solution
Working closely with Baowu’s material handling engineers, BAO developed a dedicated series of heavy-duty conveyor belts specifically matched to the mills’ operating profiles:
Impact and Tear Resistance
Reinforced breaker fabrics and high-elongation covers to absorb shock loads at high-drop chutes, combined with abrasion loss consistently below 150 mm³.
Ultra-High Strength
EP 800–1000 N/mm grades where required, maintaining ply adhesion >4.5 N/mm and tensile strength >18 MPa even after prolonged exposure to ore dust.
Thermal Tolerance
Selected covers incorporating EPDM blends for sections exposed to intermittent heat, capable of handling peak surface temperatures up to 180°C without hardening.
Long-Life Design
Optimized groove profiles and edge constructions to reduce tracking issues on long, high-speed runs typical of steel mill layouts.
BAO also established a dedicated stock program for critical widths and specifications, enabling rapid response when urgent replacements were needed during short maintenance windows.
Implementation and Support
Rollouts were phased across multiple conveyor lines during annual overhauls, with BAO technicians present to oversee splicing and initial run-in. We introduced customized monitoring guidelines—using simple visual wear markers and tension checklists—that allowed Baowu crews to predict end-of-life more accurately and schedule changeouts proactively.
